Signée par des médias d’une quarantaine de pays, une lettre ouverte exhorte la plateforme de partage de vidéos à lutter plus efficacement contre la désinformation.
YouTube fait-il le jeu de la désinformation ? Mercredi 12 janvier, plus de 80 organisations de fact-checking du monde entier ont adressé une lettre ouverte à la direction de l’entreprise. Objectif : faire en sorte que la filiale de Google apporte des mesures plus efficaces pour lutter contre les fake news. “Chaque jour, nous constatons que YouTube est l’un des principaux vecteurs de désinformation en ligne dans le monde” détaille ainsi la lettre. Constitué de médias et d’ONG basés dans une quarantaine de pays, les signataires espèrent désormais faire plier YouTube, accusé de ne pas faire “beaucoup d’efforts” pour résoudre le problème.
De son côté, la plateforme ne voit pas les choses de cet avis. Dans sa réponse publique aux accusations, YouTube indique avoir “largement investi dans des politiques et des produits (…) pour réduire la diffusion de fausses informations”. Il faut dire que depuis quelques années, le site est devenu le lieu de prédilection des complotistes et des fake news. Entre théories antivax et vidéos demandant le retour au pouvoir de Donald Trump, les signataires s’inquiètent désormais d’une “désinformation galopante”, largement accélérée par la pandémie.
Malgré les efforts de l’entreprise qui a supprimé plus d’un million de vidéos ces derniers mois, plusieurs documentaires complotistes restent encore très populaires, et YouTube peine à lutter contre les contenus problématiques. Il y a quelques mois, le film Hold Up sur le Covid-19 générait plus de deux millions et demi de vues, avant d’être finalement retiré de la plateforme.
Bien décidées à faire entendre raison à Alphabet, les ONG se disent désormais prêtes à “s’engager avec YouTube pour concrétiser leurs propositions”. Pour y parvenir, elles listent plusieurs pistes de travail, et notamment l’opacité des algorithmes, l’impunité des comptes “récidivistes” qui propagent de fausses informations de manières répétées, mais aussi la présence de bon nombre de vidéos non anglophones, qui passent régulièrement sous le radar des outils de modération du site.
